McWhinney & FRII Create Northern Colorado's First Commercial Development with Fiber Optic Service

LOVELAND, CO. – FEBRUARY 15, 2010 – A partnership between McWhinney and Internet service provider FRII has created Northern Colorado’s first commercial development to feature the highest-speed fiber optic Internet service available, which is designed to boost productivity and ensure data safety.

Companies moving into new and current buildings at Centerra in Loveland will have immediate access to extremely fast Internet service with gigabit speeds, off-site disaster recovery and inter-office connectivity. A gigabit is approximately 1 billion bits of information transferred each second.

In addition, all Centerra buildings will use the fiber network for HVAC control and building security. Fiber optics for HVAC control allows for remote and automated control of building operating systems. Building security is enhanced since fiber-optic networks are essentially tamper-proof.

“We expect this will be the model for commercial developers in the future,” said Jay Hardy, McWhinney vice president and Centerra general manager. “Telecommunication services are rarely ready for tenants when they move into a new building. We’re pleased to work with a local company that can provide top-notch service and support for our network.”

FRII is one of Northern Colorado’s largest Internet service providers. FRII’s bandwidth services for Internet access range from 10 Mbps to Gigabit speeds.

McWhinney has installed fiber at 13 commercial buildings in the Centerra development and underground in preparation for future Centerra buildings. FRII worked with McWhinney and its contractors to engineer the fiber network and will manage the ethernet over fiber service for McWhinney.

FRII is responsible for the system’s long-term monitoring and maintenance. Each McWhinney tenant can use the high-speed fiber network for a primary or secondary connection to the Internet, high speed backups or inter-office connectivity. Installation for each tenant is complete except for internal wiring.

“McWhinney’s choice to install fiber service throughout Centerra is a mutually beneficial and progressive move,” said FRII CEO Bill Ward. “They are allowing current and future tenants to have immediate access to high-speed broadband services, as well as all the benefits of being on FRII’s network. Centerra businesses can easily take advantage the fiber capabilities without experiencing the high capital costs of installing dedicated infrastructure.”
