DENVER, COLO. – January 9, 2013 – Union Station Alliance, the team of accomplished redevelopers (Larimer Associates, Sage Hospitality, REGen LLC, and Urban Neighborhoods) transforming Denver’s Union Station is pleased to announce that McWhinney has joined its team to become the investment’s managing member. McWhinney is an experienced real estate investment and development company, responsible for large-scale, multi-use developments in Colorado such as Centerra in Loveland and North Park in Broomfield.
McWhinney and Team USA will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of the overall Union Station project, including more than 22,000 square feet of destination retail space and a 112-room hotel. The redeveloped Union Station also will house Amtrak rail service, and it will be the centerpiece of RTD’s FasTracks transit expansion program.
“McWhinney has tremendous experience developing commercial and mixed-use space,” said Walter L. Isenberg, president and CEO of Sage Hospitality. “We are pleased to have the team at McWhinney join us as we transform Denver’s Union Station into a bustling mixed-use, transit-oriented hub that will be the heart of Denver’s vibrant downtown.”
The team’s vision for the revitalized historic Union Station is as a mixed use hotel and retail destination that will also serve as the transportation hub for downtown Denver and the surrounding communities. The development’s more than 22,000 square feet of ground floor space will be divided into approximately 10 independent retail and restaurant outlets, and will be complemented by 40,000 square feet of outdoor plaza space.
“We are excited to join an investment that includes such a premier team of redevelopers. We are already under construction,” said Chad McWhinney, CEO & co-founder of McWhinney. “The opportunity to work with such strong partners creating what will be downtown Denver’s signature development was too great an opportunity to pass up.”
The Denver Union Station team also announced that it has completed financing with Colorado-based FirstBank, who has successfully completed large scale redevelopments of this kind in the Lower Downtown area.
“Union Station is synonymous with Denver, and as Colorado’s largest locally owned bank, it’s a privilege to be involved in helping finance the preservation and revival of such an iconic landmark,” said John Ikard, CEO of FirstBank Holding Company. “We believe in improving the communities in which we work and live. We’re thrilled to work with local developers that feel the same and care deeply about maintaining historic staples while creating jobs and a stronger economy.”
