LOVELAND, CO. – FEBRUARY 18, 2010 – A panel of Colorado business leaders today named McWhinney “Developer of the Year” for the company’s real estate, business and community accomplishments in 2009.
McWhinney CEO and co-founder Chad McWhinney, along with Dean Barber, McWhinney vice president, accepted the honor at the annual “Best of the Best” awards luncheon in Denver today, sponsored by the Colorado chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP). The “Developer of the Year” award recognizes the real estate or development firm that made the most significant contribution to the Colorado market in 2009.
McWhinney was recognized for developing innovative and sustainable communities with a true sense of place, belonging and functionality. Since 1994, McWhinney has created several master-planned communities consisting of more than 6,000 acres of land, and has developed more than 3.6 million square feet of office, industrial, medical, retail and apartment properties throughout the Rocky Mountain region and West Coast.
In 2009, McWhinney completed four buildings in Northern Colorado totaling 420,000 square feet along with numerous tenant finishes. The company has remained strong, even in these unstable economic times. The award-nomination stated, “Consistent and stable activity is truly what separates sustainable developers from the rest of the pack. McWhinney is an organization that understands real-estate development is cyclical. The company has positioned itself to be successful in all phases of the cycle.”
McWhinney is heavily involved in the community. Since 2005, the McWhinney Foundation has donated several million dollars to a number of community programs in Northern Colorado that enhance the quality of life for children and families. In addition, company associates serve on a variety of community and business boards in Loveland, Fort Collins and Denver.
“We’re truly honored to be recognized as Colorado’s ‘Developer of the Year,’” Chad McWhinney said. “At McWhinney, our associates are passionate about creating great places for people and providing fabled experiences to our customers. This award recognizes the enthusiasm each associate has for creating value for our community.”
The annual NAIOP competition recognizes excellence in commercial real estate development. A panel of third-party real estate experts select winners and finalists from a field of eligible nominations. Though the judging criteria is category-specific, the primary focus is on each entry’s ability to meet tenant or resident needs and the best representation of community-development trends, as well as trends in the real estate industry.
